Scraffito is a plaster and painting technique. think using the opposite end of your paint brush and scratching into the wet paint to reveal color or "something" underneath the surface color.

below you'll see some painting where the great French artist Henri Matisse used the technique a lot to produce patterns of which he was completely absorbed. Narrow pencil like marks can be made or wide marks can be obtained using a popsicle stick and carving the end to the desired width.
